Time With Turtles


Baby Diamondback Terrapins will visit the classroom. At the time of the visit, these turtles can range in size from about the size of a quarter to a grapefruit. Before students meet the turtles, educators will give instructions on handling or viewing the turtles.


DNR regulations state that students must be in 3rd grade or older to touch the turtles.


2nd Grade and Younger


Younger students can have turtles visit the classroom. When Turtle time begins, they will be instructed not to touch the turtles. Educators will bring around the turtles for each student to see. They…

What to know: 

  • Students MUST be in 3rd grade or older to touch a turtle.

  • Anyone holding a turtle MUST wear gloves.

  • If you are able to provide gloves for your lesson, please let your scheduling educator know.

  • If you are a TERP teacher, these turtles are from the same Island and have been approved by the Aquarium to visit your classroom.

  • This lesson can be led inside or outside.

  • Turtles cannot visit classrooms simultaneously and will visit a maximum of 8 classrooms in a day.
