In this lesson, students will use a mock terrapin nest to play the role of a terrapin researcher. Students will how biologists on Poplar Island search for terrapin nests and how they study them. This can be done using posters and photos or a projector. Students will learn a brief history of Poplar Island and how it has changed over time. Students will be divided into 6 groups. Each group will be given a bucket of sand, data collection sheets, calibers, rulers and scales. Together they will uncover the eggs and collect data on each one. Eggs will then b…

  • This activity requires ample floor space.

  • This activity can be a bit messy; sand may get on the floor.

  • This lesson requires educators to transport sand; if your school has steps, they will need access to an elevator.

  • Access to clipboards can be helpful, but is not required.
