topic area:

diamondback terrapins & habitat restoration

overview:

Learn about threats to diamondback terrapins, the history of Poplar Island, and how the Port of Baltimore is restoring island habitat in the Chesapeake Bay and then interact with our ambassador terrapins.

grade level:

3rd - 12th

lesson details:

Diamondback Terrapins are the only turtles in the United States that live exclusively in brackish water, favoring the marshes in the Chesapeake Bay. In this lesson, learn all about threats that terrapins face as well as the history of Poplar Island and how the Port of Baltimore is working to restore island habitat through an interactive PowerPoint presentation. Participants will then have the opportunity to meet our five ambassador terrapins who are part of the Terrapin Education Research Partnership (TERP) on Poplar Island. These turtles will return to Poplar Island when they are about nine months old to help maintain the population of diamondback terrapins in the wild.
